Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) Course + Intensive Care Simulation
The BASIC course is aimed at teaching participants to rapidly assess seriously ill patients and provide initial treatment and organ support. Developed out of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, this is a 3 day course consisting of lectures, skill stations and tutorials taught by consultants or senior trainees, and half a day of simulation.
The emphasis is on a practical approach to the management of critically ill patients, and is ideal for medical staff with little ICU experience. Senior trainees in other specialities and senior nursing staff are also encouraged to attend. Educational materials include a course textbook and CD-ROM.
The RBWH ICU provides 5 of these courses throughout the year. For more information, or to register, please visit Clinical Skills Development Centre.
Beyond BASIC Courses
Developed out of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, this is a series of standalone courses aimed at advanced trainees in intensive care medicine. Currently three courses are provided internationally: Airway Management, Mechanical Ventilation, and Nephrology.
The RBWH ICU offers the Beyond BASIC Mechanical Ventilation course. For more information about upcoming courses or to register, please contact the Department Secretary.
Current Concepts in Critical Care Course
This 2-day course is aimed at advanced trainees in ICU nearing the final CICM Fellowship examination. The principle aim is to provide practical experience in the management of quaternary level sub-specialty patient groups, such as haematology, major trauma, cardiology, renal medicine, and burns.
Ideally this is suited to candidates working in centers where these patient groups are not represented. The inaugural course was held in July 2014 and the first international course was held in Singapore in July 2018.
